Our organization’s horses have worked with victims of crime for ten years. We started our work with five horses. We began taking in ponies for our clients as they came in younger and younger. Normally, our horses are ridden regularly by our instructors to keep them well mannered. The ponies were too small for adults to ride. Without this hands on effort, the ponies were not fit nor well mannered.
Mr. Kell Canty gave us a donation to purchase our first cart system with harness. We were surprised to find the ease in cross training a saddle pony to drive a cart. Once the pony is saddle trained, it is easier to teach them to drive a cart. The complete training process, including physical conditioning, for a cart pony is approximately one year. Once a pony is trained, they are routinely worked by seasoned driving instructors. The ponies can easily work for twenty years taking clients on tours.
Cart systems have become the largest growth area for our organization. We now have a total of six cart systems. Ms. Lauren Fields has donated three systems, Mr. Kell Canty has donated two systems, and Ms. Melissa Ayres has donated one system. All six systems are currently being used by our clients on our six trained ponies and miniature horses.
Driving a pony cart system is the same as riding on a horse. You will talk to the horse with your hands and control your cart exactly like you talk to our saddle horses. You will balance on the cart exactly like your seat in the saddle. The pony cart systems allows us to teach every rider proper saddle stance with an instructor sitting next to the client.
We are a field operation. You will spend all of your time with an instructor in the field during your visit here. Saddle clients must be able to mount a horse from the ground. A client needs to be able to mount a horse in the event it is necessary to dismount on the trails. Clients unable to mount a saddle horse are given the option to take the tour on a cart system.
The size of the horse and rig will be determined by the client’s driving experience, the total weight of the passengers, and the distance traveled. Our instructors will have a variety of options for your visit. We want to give you a fun and educational experience.
Our standard rides are two hours long. We encourage you to enjoy our horses and ponies, but we limit the length of the ride to the fatigue shown by the rider. Horseback riding and pony cart driving physical events. We do not want our riders too tired to enjoy the riding experience. We want to protect the safety of our riders and our horses. When riders or horses are tired, critical mistakes can endanger both the horse and the rider.
Since our horses ride on our property, we do not have any transportation costs. When we offer riders the option of enjoying other venues, we clearly state any additional transportation fees.
We want our riders and horses to be fresh and alert for their riding experience. Our horses are trained endurance horses. We do not allow our horses to ride more than twice in a single day. Most days we limit the riders and horses to one trip to the Alcovy River per day. We want everyone involved to enjoy their time at our ranch.
